Indian Tithis & festivals are usually calculated based on the lunar calendar. However, today’s festival, Makar Sankranti, is calculated based on the solar calendar.
Sankranti means Sankraman (transition), which refers to the Sun’s transition through the 12 zodiac signs throughout the year. This results in 12 Sankrantis, four of which are significant.
In Pushtimarg, two Sankrantis are given more importance – Makar Sankranti and Mesh Sankranti. Mesh Sankranti falls in the English month of April. During Makar Sankranti, the Sun enters the Makar (Capricorn) zodiac sign and transitions from Dakshinayan to Uttarayan.
In Pushtimarg, the Bhav is that there are two Sankrantis during Makar Sankranti. The day before Makar Sankranti is Bhogi Sankranti, and today is Yogi Sankranti.
Bhogi Sankranti:
All Jeevs – Vaishnavas Perform seva of Shrinathji with Different Bhavs (Sentiments). Dasya bhava, Sakhya bhava, Vatsalya bhava, Madhurya bhava (although Dasya bhava has to be established in the heart at first. Then after All the other Bhavs can be established in the heart Accurately). Prabhu Shri Krishna accepts the Seva of Vaishnavas having all of these Bhavs. Prabhu is the Bhokta of Every Bhava. Shreeji is Bhogi. Hence, This Sankranti is known as Bhogi Sankranti.
Yogi Sankranti:
Even after Prabhu has maintained the Gruhasthashram (household life) in Dwarikalila, he is a celibate, a yogi, because he is in all souls. Hence, today is Yogi Sankranti.
Vraj Leela:
In Vraj, Prabhu in Bal Bhava plays with Gend (Ball) with his Sakhas today. He flies kites with his friends and gopis. He enjoys the game.
उड़ी उडावन लागे लाल ॥
सुंदर पथक बांध मनमोहन बाजत मोरनके ताल ॥१॥
काऊ पकरत कोऊ एंचत कोऊ देखत नैन विशाल ॥
For this reason, today, in the Prabhu seva, a new ball is offered to Prabhu. A kite can be offered. Pushtimarg kirtans of Prabhu Lila of playing ball and flying a kite are sung. Today, Samgris of Sesame is offered to Prabhu. Khichdi is made from seven grains and sweet Khichdi is also offered to Prabhu.
Due to this reason, A Newly decorated Ball is offered to Prabhu in Seva. Kites also can be offered. Kirtans of Gend Khel (Ball) and Kites
