Holika dahan Story :
The story is well known that Hiranyakashipu made several attempts to kill his son, the bhakt Prahlad, who was a worshiper of Bhagwan Vishnu. One such attempt involved his sister Holika, who had a boon that she would not be harmed by fire if she entered it while wearing a protective shawl-Odhni.
For this reason, Holika sat in the fire with her nephew Prahlad. As soon as the fire was lit, her maternal instincts awakened. She felt affection for Prahlad’s devotion and then draped the protective shawl over Prahlad. As a result, she herself was burned, and Prahlad remained unharmed.
This is why this festival is called ‘Holika Pujan’.

In Nathdwara, the Holika festival and Holika Dahan are generally celebrated on Phalguna Shukla Purnima due to the prominence of the Indian Tithi. The Dolotsav is observed on the day when the Uttara Phalguni constellation is present, due to the prominence of Nakshatra.
Sometimes, if there is a date extension, the Holika festival is celebrated on Chaturdashi. The Holika Pradipan is performed before sunrise on the day of Purnima. according to the auspicious time- Muhurt. In Nathdwara, the tallest (32 feet) Holi for Shreeji is prepared. The first Holika Dahan is done for Shreeji in Nathdwara, followed by the burning of all other Holikas.
