In the Pushtimarg tradition, the festival of Dolotsav is also known as the Festival of the Conquest of Desire. On Vasant Panchami (also known as Madan Panchami), Kamadeva, the god of love, was born. He resolved to subdue our Prabhu Yogeshwar Shri Krishna with desire.
Fragrant substances like gulal, abir, chowa, sandalwood, and argaja, as well as colors, are considered to be stimulants of desire. Kamadeva was under the illusion that daily use of these would bring Prabhu under the control of desire.
In addition, Kamadeva attempted to subdue Shri Krishna by wearing women’s attire but Shri Krishna is not called Yogeshwar without reason.
The sounds of some musical instruments are also considered to be stimulants of desire. Therefore, Kamadeva made a futile attempt to prove Shri Krishna to be indulgent by playing instruments like daf and dhol, singing rasiya, dhamar, and singing unrestrained songs.
Ultimately, after forty days of futile efforts, Kamadeva sought forgiveness from the Shri Shyam Sundar.
Then, Bhagwan Yogeshwar Shri Krishna celebrated the Festival of the Conquest of Desire in the form of Dolotsav. Today, the most gulal is thrown in the spirit of victory over desire.
