Shri Krishna Govindabhishek Story :
During the festival of Govardhan Puja, Sri Krishna advised the people of Vrindavan to worship Girirajji and the cows instead of Indra Dev. This led to the celebration of Govardhan Puja and Annakut.
When Indra Dev got to know this, his ego led him to start a heavy Rainfall in the Vraj bhumi, creating a Pralay-like situation.
In response, our Prabhu upheld the Govardhan mountain in the Swaroop of Shri Govardhannathji, providing Shelter to all of Vraj Bhumi. As the situation worsened, the residents became fearful, but the Prabhu, in the Swaroop of Shri Gokulnathji, held Govardhan with one divine hand and a conch in the other.
The conch absorbed all the water and storm, and to assure the devotees, the Shreeji Appeared two more divine hands, removing their fear and strengthening their shelter. Even after seven days of continuous rain, Vraj suffered no harm and remained as it was.
This shattered the Arrogance of Indra Dev. Following his mother’s command, he approached Prabhu Sri Krishna’s Lotus feet along with the celestial Cow Surabhi, riding on the celestial Elephant Airavat. He sought forgiveness for his offense, and due to the celestial Surabhi cow, the Prabhu pardoned him.
Surabhi- Gau Mata, acknowledged the Sri Krishna as her Swami and called him “Govinda,” signifying that the Lord is the master of cows and senses (Indriya). Indra Dev then performed an Abhishek (anointing) with water from Airavat’s trunk and a milk Abhishek from Surabhi cow.
This event is also known as Govinda Abhishek.
The Abhishek led to the formation of a pond, known as Govind Kund, where even today, the pure-hearted devotees can witness streams of milk during their visit.
