Shri Mahaprabhuji, within the Pushtimarg tradition, has given paramount importance to four out of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu:
- Narasimha Avatar
- Vamana Avatar
- Rama Avatar
- Krishna Avatar
The underlying sentiment is that in these avatar’s deeds, the Lord has showered his grace on his devotees, who are devoid of any means and are the epitome of selfless devotion. ‘Grace’ here is synonymous with ‘Pushti’.
Hence, in the Pushtimarg tradition, fasting is a revered practice during the appearance celebrations of these four avatars, especially on their respective Jayantis, including Vamana Jayanti.
The primary reason for having a fast is to purify ourselves internally before the Lord graces us with his presence. By fasting, we prepare to stand before Prabhu, to behold his divine form, and to celebrate his auspicious festivals with a pure heart and soul.
Shri Vamana Avtar Pushti Lila
In the divine Vamana Leela, Lord Vishnu’s words resonate: “I take away the wealth of those upon whom I bestow my grace. When a soul is born into a human body, if it lacks arrogance related to lineage, deeds, status, appearance, knowledge, wealth, and power, it should recognize this as My great blessing.
Bali, the demon king, despite being born into an asura lineage, possessed not even a trace of demonic qualities. He remained devoted to Dharma. He ruled over all three realms—earth, heaven, and the netherworld. However, as soon as arrogance surfaced within him, Lord Vishnu did not favor arrogance in his devotees.
Taking the form of Vamana, Lord Vishnu sought alms from King Bali. Even when Guru Shukracharya advised against granting the request, Bali adhered to his dharma. “Dharmo rakshati rakshatah”—one who protects dharma is protected by it. King Bali takes it as This Yagya is for Prabhu. so if Prabhu himself came here then there is nothing greater Blessing than this.

In the divine Vamana Leela, He Gave up the grandeur of both Earth and Heaven in the Lotus Feet of Shri Vamana. He humbly Became ‘ Ni-Sadhan ‘(Helpless).
Through ‘Atma Nivedan Bhakti‘ (self-surrender devotion), He pleased the Prabhu. In response, Prabhu Shri Vamaan showered abundant grace upon Him, granting eternal life. Even during the great deluge, He promised protection.
In His next birth, He received the boon of Indra’s throne. By bestowing grace upon the King, Prabhu gave proximity to king Bali. When Prabhu showers compassion upon His devoted Ni-Sadhan souls, it becomes a Pushti Leela (nourishing play).
Hence, Bhagwan Vishnu’s Vamana avatar holds special significance on Pushtimarg – the path of spiritual nourishment.
