Naga Panchami is celebrated on various dates across India. And in our region of Vraj, today marks the festive occasion. In the Pushtimarg tradition, this festival is celebrated with the bhava of Girirajji. Today is a day of great auspiciousness and enthusiasm for the Pushti Shrushti.
Tithi : Shravan Sud Panchmi
on this day that the divine darshan of Shri Govardhanadhara Shri Govardhannathji’s Urdhva bhuja (raised arm) was revealed. On this day, a Vraj vasi searching for his cow was blessed with the darshan of the Shrinathji’s Urdhva bhuja.
In the Dwapar Yuga, Prabhu Shri Krishna’s guru, Maharishi Gargacharyaji, had foretold in the Gargasamhita, written thousands of years ago, that in Kaliyuga, Shri Krishna would Appear here.
येन रूपेण कृष्णेन घृतो गोवर्धनो गिरि: l
तद्रूपं विद्यते तत्र, राजन् श्रृंगारमंडले ll
अब्जाश्र्वतु: सहस्त्राणि तथा पंचशतानि च l
गतास्तत्र कलेरादौ क्षेत्रे श्रृंगारमंडले ll
गिरिराज गुहामध्यात् सर्वेषां पश्यंता नृप l
स्वतः सिद्धं च तद्रूपं हरे: प्रादुर्भविष्यति ll
श्रीनाथं देवदमनं च वदिष्यन्ति सज्जना: ll
Meaning, the form in which Lord Krishna (with his left hand raised) lifted the Giriraj mountain is currently residing in Vraj in a hidden form. After 4500 years of Kaliyuga, Shri Krishna’s self-manifested form will appear from the cave of Dev Shikhar in the midst of Shri Girirajji, and this form will be called by the righteous as Dev-Daman.
Maharishi Gargacharyaji’s prophecy came true to the letter. In V.S. 1466, on the day of Gurjar Ashadh Vad Teej, the appearance of the Shreeji’s Urdhva bhuja occurred from the middle peak of Girirajji. Then, on the day of Shravan Sud Pancham, a vrajwasi who came searching for his cow had the Darshan of the Shri Govardhan nathji’s Urdhva bhuja.
Subsequently, the worship of the urdhva bhuja began for 69 years. Every year on Naga Panchami, a fair started to be held here. People began to make vows. Then, on Chaitra Krishna Ekadashi of V.S. 1535, the Prabhu’s Mukharvind appeared. Prabhu then only accepted offerings of yogurt and milk.
Fourteen years later, Shri Mahaprabhuji brought Shrinathji out from the cave of Shri Girirajji in V.S. 1549.
