Shrinathji’s Asht Sakha – Asht Chhap Poet Shri Surdas ji biography

“In a small village named ‘Sihi’, near the city of Delhi, there was a Saraswat Brahmin family in Village. In the year Vikram Samvanta 1535, on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakh, the fourth child was born to this family, the 9th day from the appearance of Shri Mahaprabhuji.

The father was saddened upon seeing the face of his son Because the boy was born blind. He wondered who would take care of such a son for life. When the blind boy turned six, a king gifted the Brahmin two gold coins. The Brahmin returned home happily, thinking it would cover the year’s Grocery.

There was nothing to eat at home. At night, he tied the gold coins to a cloth and placed it in a corner of the house. At midnight, rats dragged away the tied-up cloth. In the morning, they found the cloth missing and became sad, thinking that ever since the birth of this unfortunate son, all happiness and peace had vanished.

The boy said he could tell where the cloth was but on the condition that if found, they would allow him to leave home. The family agreed, thinking they cared only for the gold coins and the blind boy was of no use anyway.

The blind boy said the cloth was in a hole on the roof. His father checked and indeed found it there. Now, the family grew fond of the boy, realizing he might not have sight but had divine vision. They all tried to stop him from leaving, but the boy left home.

He sat under a tree at some distance.

At that time, the head of the village was searching for his lost cow. The boy, using his divine vision, located the cow. The landlord, pleased, built a hut for the boy and hired a servant for him.

The boy lived in the hut and began to sing hymns. Slowly, his miraculous powers became known, and people started coming to him with their sorrows, and his glory grew. Surdas ji miracles were the topic of the town. The hut turned into a large house, and his fame spread everywhere.

Many became his disciples and wore his rosary. The boy became known as ‘Sur Swami.’ From the age of six to eighteen, Sur Swami stayed there. One night, he suddenly felt detachment and thought he had set out to seek God but got trapped in Maya (illusion).

He called his parents through a disciple and handed over all the property and wealth to them, leaving with just his clothes. He reached Mathura’s Vishram Ghat and thought if he stayed close to the colony, the same would happen again.

He had set out to sing the glory of God. So, he settled in the village of Ronakta between Mathura and Agra, at Gau Ghat. Every Night  Bhajans and prayers began there. People Started Coming from afar in here as well. The fame of Sur Swami ji spread, and Gau Ghat became a pilgrimage site.

Sur Swami ji wondered why God’s Maya did not leave him; only if God appeared before him could he be saved. Sur Swami ji’s wish was fulfilled, and one day Shri Mahaprabhuji arrived in Brij at Gau Ghat. Sur Swami ji learned that Shri Vallabhacharya had arrived.

Who had defeated the great proponents of Maya. Sur Swami ji went to see him, and Shri Vallabhacharya Gave Aagya to him to sing about the divine play of Prabhu Shri Krishna. Sur Swami ji sang

‘Ho Sab Patitan Ko Nayak.’

Shri Mahaprabhuji Says… Since we have been separated from God, we are all Patit(Impure). Do not cry over your sorrows; God will not be pleased. Sing the praises of His divine play and sing of His glory; only then will God be pleased.

Then Sur Swami ji said, ‘Lord, I do not understand Prabhu’s  divine play.’ Shri Mahaprabhuji initiated him into the Bramhasambandha, and now ‘Sur Swami’ became ‘Surdas.’ Then Shri Mahaprabhuji narrated the essence of the Tenth Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam to Surdas ji and established the divine play of Prabhu Shri Krishna in Surdas ji’s heart.

Due to Spiritual awakening, Shri Surdas ji then composed and sang a wonderful Pad of Prabhu’s Leela. He presented all his servants and made them disciples of Shri Mahaprabhuji. Then, with Shri Mahaprabhuji, he came to Gokul in Brij and had the darshan of Shri Navneet Priyaji. Then he went to Gopalpur, had the darshan of Shrinathji, and began singing the topmost of Pad before Prabhu Shreenathji. Shreeji was very pleased with Surdas ji poems (hymns).

Surdasji settled in Parasoli near Chandra Sarovar and composed about one and a quarter lakh Pads, known as “Sur Sagar’. For many years, Shri Surdas ji sang Kirtans-Pads in the seva of Shrinathji.”

He lived a life as one of the closest Krishna Sakha. Even 1000s of infact 25000 pads were created by Shri Krishna in the name of Surdasji. Because of this reason That Kirtans has “Shur Shyam” Chhap (Sort of Credentials). Which can be seen in Srudas ji’s poetry literature. There is also another Chhap in their Pads which is “Surajdas“. Intersting fact about this Chhap is that Shri Swaminiji herself created 7000 pads in the name Surasdji having “Surajdas” Chhap.

There is an amazing and interesting incident… When Surdas Ji was in Gokul performing Seva of  Shri Navneet Priyaji for two to three days. He was so graced that whatever color of clothes or Shringars were offered to Shri Navneet Priyaji, he would sing Pad matching exactly to those colors. One day, Shri Giradharji, Shri Balkrishnaji, Shri Govindrayji, and Shri Gokulnathji decided to keep the next day’s Shringaar of Prabhu a secret from Surdasji. The following day, no clothes were offered to Prabhu, and Surdasji was unaware of this. When Surdas Ji arrived and had the Darshan of the Navnit Priyaji, he composed the Pad 

‘Dekheri Hari Nangam Nanga,’

Which reflects Prabhu’s grace upon him.

Entering Nitya Lila dham

When it was time for Surdas Ji to depart from this world to join the eternal play- Nityalila, he was lying down near his hut in Parasoli, gazing at the flag of Shriji’s temple.

Shri Gusainji, who was performing the Shringar Seva for Shreeji, noticed that Surdas Ji had not come to sing kirtan and realized that Surdas Ji’s time had arrived. Aapshri  Arrived with Bhagvadiyan Vaishnavas at Chandra Sarovar. Then Shri Gusaiji Says  “:ship of Pushtimarg is departing, and whoever wished to learn anything should ask.” When Other Vaishnavas asked Surdasji why haven’t created any Kirtan for Shri Mahaprabhuji. Then Surdasji replied 

“Nyaro dekhto to Nyaro Gato”

This means If I see any difference between them then only I could sing differently. Surdasji sang the Aashray’s Pad

‘Dradh In Charanan Kero Bharoso’

Younger one Shri Chaturbhujdasji asked many questions to Surdasji to learn something from them. And Surdasji Answered in form of Kirtans.

Surdas ji left the material world and entered into nitya lila by Nityalila Dwar. Chandra Sarovar is one of the Eight Dwars of Shri Girirajji. At Chandra Sarovar still, there is a Samadhi of Surdasji.
